Mary’s Meadow

Mary’s Meadow, located in Holyoke, Massachusetts, offers a social model of long-term residential care. The revolutionary design is the first of its kind in the state. “The environment we wanted to create was being at home, not just home-like,” says Sister Mary Caritas, Vice President, Sisters of Providence. Each residential home accommodates ten people and is tastefully designed with all those well-thought-out touches and amenities that make a house a home.

The houses have a spacious entrance foyer, living room, hearth, fully equipped kitchen, dining room, den and multiple bedrooms and bathrooms. Elder assistants put each resident at the center of decision-making and assist them with meal planning, cooking, laundry, personal care and other activities. With this holistic approach to skilled nursing care, individuals living at Mary’s Meadow are better positioned to regain, and subsequently maintain, their mobility and quality of life. “In this kind of setting, you need a floorcovering that supports the overall design and creates a comfortable environment but is engineered to withstand conditions within a senior living facility,” says Mary Carangelo, principal of Carangelo Commercial Interiors. She selected several coordinating styles in Powerbond® condensed cushion RS, including Williamstown, Caledonia and Floris.

“For a couple of styles, I worked with Tarkett to create the perfect custom colors”

“The patterns and colors were important elements in tying the overall aesthetics together. For a couple of styles, I worked with my Tarkett account executive and the product development team to create the perfect custom colors to realize my design,” explains Ms. Carangelo. “We’re also very conscious of the environment and using flooring that is recyclable was an added bonus,” adds Sr. Caritas. “We love the subtle designs and the colors work to differentiate each house so residents can find their way.” Tarkett’s Powerbond, a hybrid resilient sheet flooring, provides the ideal solution. The nylon wear layer gives the floorcovering the feel and design appeal of traditional carpet. “With its compact pile, it has excellent rollability,” adds Sr. Caritas. It also provides for improved slip resistance, thermal insulation and acoustic performance. The resilient closed-cell cushion absorbs impact and provides comfort underfoot. Furthermore, the welded seams create a moisture-impermeable barrier making the floorcovering durable and easy to clean and maintain.
