Spaces of Connection

Mental health has been deemed by the Surgeon General as a crisis and threat to all students.  COVID created an interesting front-row seat to what the impact not having human connection had on our mental health. According to the CDC, connectedness within a community is an important way to support mental health and positive behaviors. Students who feel connected to their school are less likely to engage in negative, high-risk behaviors and more likely to experience academic achievement.

Indoor Air Quality

According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, indoor air quality is “air quality within and around buildings and structures, especially as it relates to the health and comfort of buildings occupants.” Research shows that school buildings impact student health, thinking, and academic performance. “Inhalation is a major route of exposure to environmental pollutants indoors, and indoor environmental exposures have been associated with various negative health outcomes. Recent transitions to more efficient and sustainable campus buildings, alongside long durations of student exposures, further motivate the need to quantify indoor air quality in higher education.”
